Times Square, Here I Come!
May 5, 2025It’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted anything more than photos on my website. In addition to writing and editing my cookbook, I’ve been preparing for the happening of my lifetime…
In less than one week, my film crew and I will descend upon New York City’s Times Square for a photo shoot that will result in one of the cover photos for my forthcoming cookbook. To say that I’m excited is a gross understatement. I think I’m shedding a skin with lack of self-containment.
This event has been more than four months in the making. It’s been a lengthy, arduous, highly detailed process, which began with creating an alliance with the head of the Times Square Alliance. With the man I’ve dubbed the “Lord of Times Square,” I scheduled my photo shoot in a location he designated, approved, and helped me orchestrate with my cover design in mind. I then moved forward with the permit application process through the New York City’s Mayor’s Office. Ultimately, it was this very efficient and supportive gentleman who pushed my permit through to approval.
After four months, my photographer commented that I don’t take no for an answer. From where I sit, it’s all about perspective and being resourceful. I have learned that there are many ways to accomplish my desired goal without pissing anyone off. I even make friends in the process. That’s who I am. I joke that you can call me a bulldog; I’ve got big shoulders. I further quip that “badass” is a bit self-aggrandizing, but it has a nice ring to it. Just call me Trixie.
I thought of creating a promotional handout for the throngs of onlookers on location. I didn’t want to create litter, so I sourced a small wooden spoon simply laser engraved with my website. Having received them in advance of the trip, I handed out a few near home. They’ve been remarkably well received. I was even asked to autograph several of them, which stopped me in my tracks. THAT was a first.
Y’all, I’m not in this for the money, and certainly not any notoriety. I stand by my tag line of making connections through the art, heart, and soul of cooking. By far, that’s been the most fulfilling and rewarding aspect of this journey.
I also want to come into people’s kitchens, figuratively speaking, to create and support a “You do you” mindset. I’d like to encourage people to identify their personal tastes, respect their dietary considerations, claim their culinary style, own what feels good to them, and turn their cooking experience into something that feels approachable, manageable, and meaningful within their own capabilities in their own kitchen. It may sound like a lot, but it’s the opposite. Creating simply and keeping it simple. Along the way, there’s a lot of really good food and enjoyment in the process.
Hey, if you’re anywhere near Times Square, specifically W 44th Street and Broadway at Military Island, on Saturday, May 10th, between 4:30p and 8:00p, please stop by, say hi, and take a spoon! I’ll be the redhead in the red polka dot dress posing with a vintage checkered cab. It’s gonna be a blast!!
